UAlg recognised globally as a pioneer in commitment to SDGs

The University of Algarve (UAlg) integrates for the third time the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which evaluates at a global level the performance and contribution of universities to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. UAlg was ranked 201-300 in the general classification of THE Impact Rankings, among 1406 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from 106 countries.

It should be noted that this edition had 288 more HEIs and 12 more countries than in the previous edition, which met the inclusion requirements.

In this fourth edition, UAlg submitted information for all the SDGs. Each goal has several specific metrics associated, which measure the impact of HEIs towards the pursuit of that SDG. Universities can submit data for as many SDGs as they wish, but to be included in the global ranking they must submit data for a minimum of 4 SDGs, and goal 17, which accounts for partnerships for the development of the goals, is mandatory.

UAlg was evaluated in all 17 SDGs, having obtained an overall rating of 79.8 out of 100, an increase of 0.6 compared to 2021 (79.2). For this classification were taken into account three of the SDGs where UAlg obtained the best classification. The Academy stood out in SDG 5 - Gender equality (70.5), ranking 48 in 938 HEIs that presented evidence of contributions to this goal; SDG 7 - Renewable and affordable energy (70.6), ranked 63 in 705 HEIs, SDG 16 - Peace, justice and effective institutions (79.5), in position 91 in 809 HEIs, and SDG 17 - Partnership for the implementation of the goals (73.5), ranking 301-400 in 1438 HEIs. The Institution also stood out in SDG 14- Protect Marine Life (71.1) where it occupied position 73 out of 452 HEIs.

In this ranking, which evaluates universities by the way they contribute to society, institutions are evaluated taking into account three indicators: research, which produces knowledge to help solve the world's problems; administration, which must manage resources well; and direct action, that is, the way the University acts in society.

Regarding the SDGs in which UAlg stood out, SDG 5 - Gender equality, measures the research of HEIs on this theme, as well as its contribution to gender equality and to "empower" women and girls. SDG 7 measures UAlg's contribution to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, namely through its research and action. SDG 16 - Peace, justice and effective institutions, measures the HEIs' research on this topic, as well as their policies to ensure equal access to justice, for the reduction of all forms of violence and their commitment in promoting the rule of law, at national and international level.

The inclusion in this ranking and the results obtained are a great achievement for UAlg because it is recognized as a pioneer at a global level, demonstrating its commitment not only in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals through teaching, research and knowledge transfer, but also in incorporating these objectives in the main guidelines of the Institution.
