Professor João Guerreiro took office as president of A3ES

 
The University of the Algarve welcomes the appointment of João Guerreiro, full professor and former rector of this Academy, to the presidency of the Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation of Higher Education, A3ES.

The inauguration ceremony of the new A3ES Board of Directors preceded the conference “Reflecting on the past and the future of the evaluation and accreditation of higher education in Portugal”, which took place on December 18, at Teatro Thalia, in Lisbon , from 11 am to 12:30 pm.

In this conference, which began with an introduction by Manuel Sobrinho Simões, president of the A3ES Board of Trustees, the outgoing president, Alberto Amaral, intervened, followed by João Guerreiro, who made his first speech as president of A3ES. It should be noted that the former rector of UAlg had until then served as president of the National Commission for Access to Higher Education (CNAES).

The conference program also included a debate with brief interventions by presidents of academic federations and the presidents of the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP), Coordinating Council for Higher Polytechnic Institutes (CCISP) and the Portuguese Association of Private Higher Education (APESP) .

The closing session was chaired by Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

About João Guerreiro:
João Pinto Guerreiro has a degree in Geography from the University of Lisbon, a master of science in Rural Planning and Environment, a PhD in Economic Sciences and an aggregate in Regional Economics from the University of Algarve. In addition to being the rector of UAlg (2006-2013), he held several functions in the scope of university management, with special emphasis on those who are pro-rector for the transfer of technology and innovation and those of coordinator of the Regional Center for Innovation in the Algarve. He was also chairman of the Algarve Region Coordination Commission (1996-2003) and the Algarve Operational Program - PROA.

In 2017 he chaired the Independent Technical Commission on fires, appointed by the Assembly of the Republic.

Since 2013 he served as president of the National Commission for Access to Higher Education (CNAES).
